SIM card registration will start from October 1 to December 31, 2021.
All existing mobile network subscribers are expected to present their Ghana-Cards to enable them to register while foreigners will provide their passports and travel documents for registration.
Business entities must also provide their business registration documents to the Registrar General’s Department for registration.
Ghanaian network subscribers can register up to 10 SIM cards on all mobile networks, while foreigners can register three.
Ms Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communication and Digitization, who announced this during the minister’s briefing in Accra on Sunday, said those who did not register their existing SIM cards would see them blocked.
She said the registration would reduce SIM boxing and other criminal activity by fraudsters using fake SIM cards.
The exercise complies with the Subscriber Identity Module Registration Regulation, 2011, LI 2006.
The SIM card registration should have taken place in March of last year, but the Covid-19 pandemic has delayed the process.
Registration would be carried out by agents of the mobile network operators at designated registration centers and post offices in Ghana.
The exercise is expected to create better customer demographic databases for mobile networks to help them develop better products and services.
In addition, the National Communications Authority would have accurate data to regulate the telecommunications industry and improve e-government services for economic growth.
Meanwhile, Ms Owusu-Ekuful announced that the Central Equipment Identity Registry will soon be established to combat smuggling and trade in counterfeit, stolen and substandard mobile devices.
Ghana would also be connected to the global database to access IMEI of approved and blacklisted devices to facilitate authentication of mobile devices, she said.
