Activist lawyer Femi Falana called on the federal government led by President Muhammadu Buhari to stop creating problems for state governors.
Falana said Buhari’s government should allow states to deal with the open grazing problem rather than causing them problems.
Nigeria’s senior lawyer SAN, who spoke at an event in Abuja, explained that governors preside over land in their states, which is why they should handle the matter.
He warned the president against reopening grazing roads.
Falana questioned Buhari’s decision to approve the money for herding in Katsina state.
The senior lawyer also said that the armed shepherds crisis can be resolved scientifically.
He said, “Take the issue of herding, where the shepherds – the armed shepherds kill people. This is a problem that can be solved scientifically.
“Today the governors of Kaduna, Zamfara and Katsina states have banned interstate movement of cattle. Which is a ban on open grazing.
“So if you donate money for animal husbandry in Katsina state, why are you now looking for grazing roads in other states?
“This problem should be left to the states because, outside of the Federal Capital Territory, each state’s land is vested in the state governor on behalf of the people.
“The federal government should not continue to cause problems for our people. “
Buhari had recently ordered the revision of grazing routes in some states.
This followed the continued clash between ranchers and farmers across the country.
Several Nigerians have been killed and communities sacked due to persistent clashes between farmers and herders.
