Messi’s fax was addressed to Bartomeu and sent to Barcelona headquarters on August 24 at 6:19 p.m. – just over a week after the Champions League turmoil.
Burofax described a clause in Messi’s contract that said he could leave the club if he asked before the end of the season.
The planned end of the 2019-20 season was June 10, 2020, however, given the football disruption due to the coronavirus pandemic, this date has been pushed back.
Messi argued that the delays caused by the global pandemic meant the clause was still valid, but Barcelona refused to stick to it due to Manchester City’s interest.

The 34-year-old Argentina international also cited a state of alarm and force majeure in his letter, insisting the clause should still stand due to the pandemic.
During a state of alert, the clauses and obligations provided for in a contract are suspended. While force majeure generally exempts one or both parties from fulfilling the obligation stipulated in their agreement due to an unforeseen event beyond their control.
The burofax, which was published by Mundo Deportivo, read: “By means hereof, and in accordance with the provisions of article 3.1. of the contract of November 25, 2017, I express to you my desire to terminate my employment contract as a professional footballer with an effective date of August 30, 2020.

Nonetheless, Messi left Barcelona this summer after the Catalan giants confirmed they were unable to register his new La Liga contract.
The news left Messi devastated after agreeing to take a 50% salary reduced from his previous agreement to adhere to La Liga Financial Fair Play rules and remain at the club.
This would have seen Messi’s earnings cut by £ 250,000 per week on the proposed new five-year contract. However, the 34-year-old would be happy to take the hit if it meant he could re-register as a Barcelona player.
Due to La Liga rules, PSG have stepped for the superstar and signed him to a two-year contract worth a staggering £ 1million per week.
