The Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) of the Greater Accra region are about to issue decrees aimed at regularizing okada, pragia and aboboyaa operations within their jurisdiction.
These decrees are at the initiative of the Regional Coordination Council of Greater Accra, to ensure that the nuisances often created by the operators of these motor vehicles are taken care of.
Mr. Joseph Kwesi Gbeze, presiding member of the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA), revealed it to the road safety campaign platform of the Ghana News Agency and the Department of Transportation and circulation (MTTD) of Tema.
The campaign aimed to create continuous awareness on road safety regulations for all road users including drivers, pedestrians, stakeholders, among others and their responsibilities.
Mr Gbeze said the assembly city guards, as well as the MTTD, were often outmaneuvered by the drivers of those motorcycles and tricycles who turned public transport against the laws of the land.
He revealed that “the difficulty that city guards face is that whenever they apprehend them, they deny using it for commercial purposes and instead claim that their passengers and passengers are their relatives, which makes it difficult to l law enforcement because it is not easy. prove that they are using it for commercial purposes ”.
He said that just like commercial vehicles whose operations are regulated and the permits given to them by the Assembly, motorcycles and tricycles would also be handled in the same way by the Assembly regulations after the publication of the gazette.
The prime minister said the permit for commercial vehicles to operate in the municipality had to be renewed every year, however specifying that some opted for a quarterly renewal which was granted.
Mr. Gbeze therefore commended the Tema regional office of the Ghanaian News Agency for the initiative to educate the public on the need to fight road accidents.
He also congratulated the DCOP Barima Tweneboah Sasraku II, commander of the regional police of Tema; Chief Superintendent William Asante, MTTD Regional Command and Mr. Solomon Tettey Appiah, Director General of Kpone Katamanso Municipality for their commitment to enforce road safety rules.
MTTD accident data for the first half of the year indicates that out of a total of 637 road accidents, 445 were in private vehicles. In the first quarter of 344 road accidents of private vehicles recorded 248 and in the second quarter of 293 accidents of private vehicles recorded 197.
In the first quarter, 99 motorcycles were involved in crashes; while in the second trimester the number was 83.
