Six golfers were named Wednesday to complete the 12-man U.S. team that will compete in the final Ryder Cup match against a team of European golfers that will be played September 24-26 at Whistling Straits in Haven, Wisconsin.
U.S. Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker has picked Tony Finau, Xander Sc Chaudele, Jordan Spieth, Harris English, Daniel Berger and Scottie Scheffler as his pick.
Six golfers had already qualified for the team on the basis of a cumulative point system linked to recent performances. They were Collin Morikawa, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay. The number of captain’s selections on the American side has increased from four to six for this edition of the competition.
The European team are the reigning champions after a resounding victory in 2018 in France. European captain Padraig Harrington will announce his captain choices on Sunday. Paul Casey, Tommy Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland, Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm automatically qualified for the European team. The Ryder Cup is usually played every two years but has been postponed to 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The US team lost for the sixth time on foreign soil in 2018, a competition that included squabbles over player pairs and poor performances by three of the four optional caps made by Jim Furyk, this year’s US captain- the.
