The very first animated, kid-centered version of Star Trek finally has a launch date: Star Trek: Prodigy will premiere on Paramount + on Thursday, October 28 with a one-hour debut episode, as just announced as part of ViacomCBS’s Star Trek Day celebration.
The global live broadcast focused on the original’s 55th anniversary Star Trek launched its section focused on Prodigy by revealing the official trailer and key art for the new series, which is produced by Kevin and Dan Hageman. The clip was presented by series star Kate Mulgrew, who will (sort of) reprise her role as Kathryn Janeway for the series.
In the new trailer, we see a few young aliens in the distant Delta Quadrant, on a planet where we are told “hope has no purpose here.” Naturally, there is some hope, in the form of an abandoned Starfleet ship, that they are requisitioning to leave the planet. During the two-minute trailer, we meet our main alien children, as well as our first good look at the villains, The Diviner (voiced by John Noble) and Drednok (voiced by Jimmi Simpson). While we’re not sure why – as of yet – The Diviner wants the ship the kids have, for unknown purposes.
And while we can only see Janeway in hologram form, the Hagemans teased during a recent Television Critics Association (TCA) panel that the former captain of the Traveler is not the only one Star Trek character that we will meet as the children move from the Delta Quadrant to the Alpha Quadrant, which is home to most of the Star Trek shows.
The series also stars Rylee Alazraqui, Brett Gray, Angus Imrie, Jason Mantzoukas, Ella Purnell and Dee Bradley Baker. In total, the first season of Prodigy will have 10 episodes, including the premiere, which means it will most likely run until December 23, although the exact date for the Season 1 finale is to be determined.
