A total of 51 women beneficiaries of the Youth Employment program received heavy truck driving training through its Zoom Captains program of Zoomlion Ghana Limited. They completed a 15-week training that was crowned in a closing ceremony on Friday, September 10, 2021, at the Armed Forces Supply and Transport Training School (FATS), Burma camp in Accra.
The Zoom Captains concept was launched on July 16, 2008, when 25 female youth employment beneficiaries were trained in the use of various categories of heavy / earthmoving equipment. (Excavators, Graders, Vibratory Rollers, Payloaders and Trash Compactors) Today these operators have been absorbed into our day-to-day operations and can be seen exhibiting their skills at the various landfills and sites where we need to build roads to facilitate our operations.
It is the company’s goal to also create a work environment that encourages and promotes affirmative action in less popular female positions as the Zoom Captains program has been extended to traditional business conduct.
Closing the ceremony, the Commander of FATS, Lieutenant Colonel Franklin Gyamerah Amoako, tasked the participants to put into practice the knowledge and skills they have acquired as well as the discipline they have experienced. He expressed the school’s appreciation to the Jospong Group of Companies for including them in their training program.
“And I also hope that when you come out you will have the opportunity to manage and operate these vehicles because you have all the skills to do it,” he said.
However, he recommended that new female heavy truck drivers be attached to the company’s male heavy truck drivers in order to build their confidence and sharpen their skills and allow new female drivers to familiarize themselves with heavy truck operations. . Vehicles.
According to Lt. Col. Franklyn Gyamerah Amoako, the ladies learned skills in driving various tonnage capacities of trucks, “I have to say these were ladies who had no driving knowledge, and in the allotted time. , could be transformed from Ground Zero to heavy truck drivers, ”he revealed.
With the help of instructors, he said, trainees learned from scratch how to move a vehicle at rest, change gears, control direction, road signs, handling and ethics among several subjects and skills. He explained that this was due to the fact that in addition to the weight of the vehicle, participants had to be introduced to hydraulic systems, which are a major feature of heavy trucks.
“I am also happy to note that in collaboration with the DVLA, the school has succeeded in acquiring the B license for all 51 participants, on which they will be systematically migrated to the C, D license in due course.
Ms Florence Larbi, Director of Operations (COO) of the Environment and Sanitation division of Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), congratulated the heavy truck drivers for having followed a successful 15-week training course.
She said they were street sweepers who had no idea how to drive, saying “today they were trained to drive heavy company trucks.”
She asserted that the vision of JGC Executive Chairman Dr Joseph Siaw Agyepong has always been to empower women to seize these stimulating opportunities to make them confident and compete with their male counterparts.
“Zoomlion Ghana Limited and the entire Jospong Group have a culture of empowering our staff with the necessary learning interventions. For example, this year alone our organization has invested around one million cedis in the development needs of our personnel with the Ghana Armed Forces Training School, ”she noted.
In addition, the company continues to focus on improving diversity and inclusion programs, and this is another reason why all of these women here have been selected to undertake this development program.
Earlier this year, one hundred drivers and two hundred janitors were trained and passed the same school. These included ladies. In addition, our management team also participated in senior management leadership training courses.
