Acting Director of Public Affairs ACP Kwesi Ofori said the Ghana Police Service has plans in place to quell any disruption resulting from the announcement of candidates for Metropolitan, Municipal and Chief Executive positions. district (MMDCE).
According to him, the police administration ordered all regional commanders to increase the security presence in their various areas after protests were recorded in parts of the country.
Speaking on Midday News on Joy FM, ACP Ofori said: “Therefore, all regions have their deployment plans based on what they know and what they have. I can say that in Accra, for example, the deployment has been carried out in all 14 divisions supported by regional operations and national operations as well and the police are very vigilant. “
It comes after young people from Odododiodoo and Bukom took to the streets to protest the alleged impeachment of the current mayor of Accra.
It follows that Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah will be replaced by Elizabeth Sackey, the former deputy minister of the Greater Accra region.
Residents were seen with red armbands and helmets protesting and calling on the president to keep Mr Sowah as head of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.
Mr Sowah distanced himself from the protests, saying that despite the unrest he supported the president’s decision to pick any new candidate he deemed appropriate for the post.
Later, the police department arrested four residents of Odododiodoo for leading the demonstration in the constituency against the alleged impeachment of the chief executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah.
The fourth; Salaami Bukari, 36, Daniel Opare Oman, 43, Edward Holm, 38, and Daniel Clottey, 41, according to a press release signed by Deputy Police Commissioner Kwesi Ofori blocked a section of the road in Jamestown by burning tires on Saturday.
ACP Ofori said JoyNews‘Ernest Manu that those arrested were held for investigation.
“In addition, they were able to stop the disorderly behavior, especially in areas where tires and missiles were launched on the main road,” he said.
He added that the police are still patrolling the Odododiodoo constituency to ensure that no further protests are recorded.
