Biden promises 500 million additional doses of Covid-19 vaccine to developing world

The United States will donate an additional 500 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine to developing countries starting next year.

President Joe Biden took that promise at a virtual Covid-19 summit on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, promising an “arsenal of vaccines.”

The additional jabs will see the total US commitment on vaccine sharing exceed one billion jabs.

Experts say about 11 billion doses are needed to immunize at least 70% of the world’s population.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has set a minimum target of 40% vaccination coverage in each country by the end of 2021.

But the goal is unlikely to be achieved.

While many high-income countries have now given at least one injection to more than half of their population, only 2% of people in low-income countries have received their first dose, according to data from the University of Oxford.
