Saoirse Ronan claims Kanye West and Kim Kardashian inspired Macbeth’s role

Saoirse Ronan has said she was inspired by Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s tumultuous relationship for her upcoming role as Lady Macbeth.

The four-time Oscar nominee will make her UK stage debut opposite Easttown mare Macbeth by actor James McArdle, in director Yaël Farber’s upcoming production, Macbeth’s tragedy.

Ronan and McArdle envisioned Macbeth and Lady Macbeth as a “modern power couple” about whom there is intense public speculation but so little is actually known.

In an interview with BBC News, the Lady Bird star said: “We still think of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth as a Kim and Kanye situation where there have been steps to their success and real ups and downs.”

The stars of Macbeth’s tragedy also revealed that they named their characters Susan and Neil Macbeth for the modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s play.

“It helps,” Ronan explained, “because this is a domestic tragedy about a couple.”

Talk to Vogue earlier this week, Glasgow-born McArdle said the Macbeths in the new play were “much more in love than Romeo and Juliet.”

“They have been together for years and have lived through the death of a child. The play is about the Macbeth tragedy, not just Macbeth.

McArdle and Ronan previously worked together onscreen in Josie Rourke’s period drama Mary Queen of Scots, as well as on top Ammonite with Kate Winslet.

McArdle said Winslet is planning to come see Macbeth’s tragedy when it opens at the Almeida Theater in London on October 1 and through November 20.
