Newmont Ghana said the Ahafo Mine Water Storage Facility (WSF), where two teenagers were shot yesterday, is a protected area with warning signs to discourage unauthorized entry and a security team from the company patrolling the facility.
Two teenagers from Kenyas No.2 drowned at the Newmont Ahafo Mine Water Storage Facility (WSF) on Thursday, September 23.
The remains were collected by members of the community under the direction of the police.
According to preliminary information, four teenagers gained private property, two of whom decided to swim in the WSF, which resulted in their drowning.
The incident has been reported to police and regulators who are currently investigating the incident. Newmont is cooperating with investigations.
“Our deepest condolences go to the bereaved families,” said François Hardy, regional senior vice president, Africa operations, in a statement issued by the director of communications and external relations, Samuel Osei.
Mr Hardy added that officials at the Ahafo mine have visited the families of the deceased to express their sympathy for their loss.
In keeping with local tradition, the statement noted that the relevant traditional authorities had been duly notified and the society would work with them to undertake the necessary traditional rites.
He added that Newmont is cooperating with the investigations.

Drowning claims the lives of two teenagers in the community
Accra, September 24, 2021 – Two teenagers from Kenyas No.2 have been confirmed to have died following a drowning incident at the Newmont Ahafo Mine (WSF) water storage facility. The remains were collected by members of the community under the direction of the police.
According to preliminary information, four teenagers gained private property, two of whom decided to swim in the WSF, which resulted in their drowning.

The water storage facility is a dam created by Newmont Ghana to store the fresh water necessary for the operation of the mine. The dam is a protected area with warning signs to discourage unauthorized entry and a company security team patrolling the facility.
