Andy Murray suffered a straight set loss to Norway’s Casper Ruud in the second round of the San Diego Open.

Andy Murray was knocked out of the San Diego Open, while Cameron Norrie won in the all-British clash against Dan Evans.

The former world No.1 received a wild card in the tournament as he continues his final comeback after hip surgery and other injuries, losing to second seed Casper Ruud 7-5 6- 4 in one hour and 49 minutes.

Currently ranked 109th, Murray made it through the first round with a straight set victory over lucky loser Denis Kudla of the United States.

The Norwegian, who won four clay court tournaments in Europe earlier this year, then congratulated Murray on his return, saying he played “at a high level” in their match.

โ€œOn the other side of the net there was a legend of the game over the past decade, even what he has been doing for the past year, fighting to recover from a very serious injury has been an inspiration to me, “Ruud said in his field interview, broadcast on ATP Tennis TV.

โ€œOver the past 10 or 15 years he’s been an inspiration to watch TV, the way he fights and always finds a way to never give up.

“The way he plays has been amazing. It’s been a bad few years for him, but it’s great to see him again and I think he was playing at a high level today.”

Meanwhile, Murray, who reached the quarter-finals of the Moselle Open last week in Metz, received a wild card for next week’s BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

Norrie came back from behind in the first set to sink compatriot Evans in their showdown in San Diego.

Norrie won the battle for Britain’s top two players 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 after firing back 5-2 and saving two set points in the opener.

He maintained Norrie’s good record against eighth seed Evans, having also won his only previous clash in this year’s Australian Open first round.

Canada’s Denis Shapovalov qualified for the quarter-finals against Norrie after moving away from American Taylor Fritz 7-6 (7) 6-2.

Russian world number 24 Aslan Karatsev caused a minor surprise by beating fifth-seeded Pole Hubert Hurkacz 5-7 6-4 6-2 and will now face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, 29th, who overtook lucky loser August Holmgren from the Denmark 6-1 6-1, and ninth seed of Italy Lorenzo Sonego defeated American Sebastian Korda 6-4 6-3.
