President Akufo-Addo jokingly referred to some contenders for the next post of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer.
Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen as well as Food and Agriculture Minister Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto are said to have ambitions to become the ruling party’s flag bearer.
This comes at a time when the president is barely entering his second term.
While introducing dignitaries on a tour of the Ashanti region on Friday, October 1, 2021, the President spoke to Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, about two people he overheard wanting to run for the seat of President.
“Asantehene, let me introduce my team members to you. This is your grandson, Dr Afriyie Akoto, my agricultural minister who wants to become president.
Laughter spread throughout the assembly after this statement and the president couldn’t help but join them.
“Nana, here is Alan Kyeremanten, he has been running for my seat for a very long time, a very workaholic minister,” he added.
Meanwhile, the NPP has warned its members against openly declaring such intentions, but there are rumors that some people intend to challenge.
The party issued a code of conduct for all aspiring members and warned against punitive measures if anyone is found campaigning.
Currently, the main candidates include Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
President Akufo-Addo, who has led the party since 2008, continued his tour of the Ashanti region on Saturday with a visit to Darko Farms and an inspection of the Abuakwa-Tanoso road.
