Groundbreaking for the € 66.35 million ($ 75.23 million) second phase of the expansion project took place in November 2018, which includes the construction of a new passenger terminal and multiple service facilities at the airport.
The new terminal will have the capacity to handle more than one million passengers per year, while the existing runway is to be extended from the current 1,981 meters to 2,300 meters, allowing the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft such than the Boeing 737-800.
Phase III
As part of the third phase, the scope of work is the development of an extension of the terminal, a new fire station, a new access road to the fire brigade and a new air traffic control tower.
Other facilities are the development of a 9,000 square meter parking extension, a 4,200 square meter access road extension and two new boarding bridges, while the scope of work on the side runway includes a 7,731 square meter apron extension, a 202,805 square meter runway extension and an airside service road.
Background
Construction of Kumasi Airport was approved in 1940 and operations began in 1943.
Airside operations at the airport were streamlined by the government with a series of development activities carried out on the runway between 1958 and 1959.
The airport underwent major renovations such as the installation of taxiway lights and the extension of the runway to the south during the 1970s.
The installation of another lighting system, the extension of the runway and the construction of a new terminal were completed in 1993 as part of a modernization project.
The airport served as a military base until its conversion to a domestic airport in 1999.
