The Guinean military leader has appointed former civil servant Mohamed Beavogui as prime minister to oversee the transition to civilian rule after last month’s coup.

Mr. Beavogui, 68, is an expert in agricultural finance. He is linked to Diallo Tellia – a former Guinean diplomat who served as the first secretary-general of the Organization of African Unity, news agencies report.

His appointment was announced Wednesday in a decree read on public television.

The coup leader, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, was sworn in as interim president on Friday.

He is prohibited from running in future elections as part of plans to restore civilian rule. He promised to organize free, credible and transparent elections but did not specify when.
