With a career of just under five years, Montero Lamar Hill, more commonly known as Lil Nas X, sent shockwaves through the music world. With 89 award nominations and 22 wins, Lil Nas X quickly rose to the top as one of the most recognizable artists of his generation.

However, there is one question that no one can really answer: where did it come from?

It all started in 2018 with a simple phrase about a horse. From the start of production on “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X began creating memes to promote the song. These memes, coupled with its internet comedy history, skyrocketed its success as the song rose in popularity on platforms, such as TikTok, which welcomed it with open arms.

Following the immediate success of “Old Town Road”, Lil Nas X released a remixed version with country music actor and singer Billy Ray Cyrus. The song was remixed again, keeping Cyrus and adding Diplo, then remixed again with Cyrus and added rapper Young Thug and “Walmart yodeling kid”, Mason Ramsey. There were other remixes as well, including one with CupcakKe and another with Lil Wayne.

Shortly after Lil Nas X’s song became a worldwide sensation in 2019, Lil Nas X released the single “Panini” ahead of their debut EP, 7. The song and the music video were something unlike anything the audience had experienced before. A unique style that has continued in his current video productions, “Panini” built a brand for Lil Nas X that was totally different from other artists.

“Panini” built on the success brought by “Old Town Road” and “Rodeo” continued that success, with fans hooked and asking for more. His 7 The EP, released in June 2019, coincided with his openness to his sexuality. As a gay man, Lil Nas X has said in interviews how difficult it is to speak openly about his sexuality in the rap industry, but thanks artists Frank Ocean and Tyler, the creator, for inspiring him to live life authentically.

In March 2021, “Old Town Road” became the most widely broadcast song of all time, with an estimated 2.9 billion on-demand plays, according to Graph data. The original “Old Town Road” went 15 times certified platinum – the first song to do so – in September. The remix with Cyrus achieved platinum status 10 times.

On August 31, fans rejoiced when Lil Nas X announced that their debut album, consisting of 15 tracks and featuring five different artists, would hit streaming platforms on September 17. While Lil Nas X had made it clear that he was working on an album, a series of controversies throughout 2021 had distracted the public’s attention. “Satan’s shoes” containing real human blood and a Nike trial weighed heavily on his image. Rather than fall for the review, Lil Nas X leaned into it and released “Call Me By Your Name (Montero)”, one of his biggest hits to date.

Despite these controversies, Lil Nas X released his eponymous record “Montero” and wowed fans. Prior to the album, Lil Nas X released “Industry Baby” and “Sun Goes Down”. Along with the full release of the album, Lil Nas X released a music video corresponding to each track, further boosting his creativity and wacky ideas.

Despite the four-year success period, Lil Nas X was never featured on another artist’s song. However, he presented many of them on his own. Besides Cyrus, Young Thug, and the “Old Town Road” remixes, Lil Nas X has worked with Cardi B, Jack Harlow, Doja Cat, Elton John, Megan Thee Stallion and Miley Cyrus, to name a few.

Lil Nas X’s career continues to grow and his fans can’t wait to see what he does next.
