MOSCOW (REUTERS) – Russia has charged with treason the chief executive of a large Russian cybersecurity company, sources quoted by local news agencies said Thursday (October 7th).

Ilya Sachkov, founder and CEO of Group-IB, was arrested last week and detained for two months. Law enforcement agents raided the offices of his company in Moscow.

He has been charged with disclosing state secrets, the Interfax news agency reported. He did not specify what information Sachkov allegedly shared, or with whom.

Group-IB investigates high-tech crimes and online fraud, with international clients that include banks, energy companies, telecommunications companies and Interpol.

At the time of his arrest, which his lawyer said he would appeal, Sachkov denied the allegations of collaboration with unspecified foreign intelligence services and damage to Russia’s national interests, TASS reported.

TASS and RIA, two state news agencies, said Thursday he had been charged with treason, without providing details.

Treason is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Details of these cases are rarely made public due to their classified nature.

In a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin published in the Russian version of Forbes on Wednesday, Sachkov’s mother Lyudmila urged the president to release her son, calling him a “sincere patriot”.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the letter had not reached the presidential administration.

“I understand the emotional state of his mother. Very serious charges are brought against her son,” Peskov told reporters. “But only a court can find a person guilty.”
