Get ready to revisit Stoneybrook, Connecticut: The babysitters club returns to Netflix for Season 2 on October 11.
Season 1 featured a revamped version of the decades-old book series that was popularized in the late ’80s and early’ 90s, beginning with the formation of the titular club by Kristy (Sophie Grace), Momona ( Claudia Kishi), Stacey (Shay Rudolph) and Mary Anne (Malia Baker). Kristy assumes the role of club president, Mary Anne the secretary, Stacey the treasurer and Claudia the vice-president.
At the same time, Kristy’s mother, Elizabeth (Alicia Silverstone) is preparing to marry her longtime boyfriend, Watson, much to Kristy’s chagrin. However, it was Watson who gave the BSC their first concert, after he asked them to take care of his children. It doesn’t take long for a rival club to emerge: the Baby-Sitters Agency, made up of money-conscious teenagers with cars and cachet. However, it is revealed that the BSA is irresponsible with the children it is charged with looking after. When the BSA begins to lose clients, it posts a video of Stacey having a diabetes attack, forcing parents to rethink the capabilities of the Babysitters Club. Stacey is then forced to reveal her diabetic status to her friends, and they support her. The girls meet their clients and reassure them that despite Stacey’s diabetes, the group is quite capable of caring for their children.
After righting the ship, their business begins to take off – until Mary Anne breaks the rules and takes on a babysitting job on her own. This causes a breakup in the group and when Mary Anne confides in her father (Marc Evan Jackson) he calls everyone’s parents, which makes the situation worse. Ostracized, Mary Anne bonds with Dawn (Xochitl Gomez), a new student who recently moved to Stoneybrook from Los Angeles. Mary Anne continues her solo sitting job, but ends up having to take the child, Bailey, to the hospital. Once there, Bailey, who is transgender, is manhandled by doctors, which Mary Anne disputes. After learning of the ordeal, the group welcomes Mary Anne again, and she and her father mend their relationship in the process. It is also revealed that Mary Anne’s father and Dawn’s mother (Jessica Elaina Eason) were high school sweethearts.
Mary Anne introduces Dawn to the club, but has to earn her entry, so Dawn takes on a babysitting job herself. When her services are taken advantage of by the mother of a child, the rest of the club steps in to defend her, fully accepting her into the group. It is also here that Kristy reveals that her father abandoned their family.
The season plunges into sentimentality as Mary Anne, Claudia and Stacey help redecorate Mary Anne’s bedroom with photos of her mother, who died when Mary Anne was 18 months old. Later, Claudia argues with her sister, Janine (Aya Furukawa), causing their grandmother (Takayo Fischer) to have a mild stroke. At the hospital, their grandmother begins to talk about her life and experiences in a wartime internment camp. Their grandmother speaks Japanese that Claudia cannot speak yet, but Janine does. It brings the sisters together and inspires Claudia to draw a picture of her grandmother as a young girl in WWII.
After spring break arrives, the girls do a week-long concert by a beach, which makes Stacey have a crush on an older lifeguard. However, he reveals that he has a girlfriend and Mary Anne comforts her. At the same time, Kristy accidentally destroys Watson’s car, but he assures her that everything is fine, thus strengthening their relationship as a future daughter-in-law and father-in-law.
As the season picks up, the girls prepare to attend Moosehead Camp for the summer, with the exception of Claudia, who may not be able to afford it. Meanwhile, Elizabeth and Kristy clash over the lavish lifestyle Watson is bringing to their family. Elizabeth thinks Kristy has become spoiled, while Kristy feels despised, never having wanted her mother to remarry in the first place. At the wedding, Kristy has her first period, receiving help and support from the rest of the club. Feeling better, she reconciles with her mother before she and Watson leave for their honeymoon.
The two-part final takes place at the summer camp, which Claudia can attend, having given up on the art camp. The group’s first fight comes when they learn that they won’t all be in the same cabin. Mary Anne later befriends a girl named Laine (Beatrice Kitsos) and befriends her because of their love for Broadway. They plan to put on a play for the camp, but Mary Anne learns that Laine knew Stacey and was mean to her once she found out about Stacey’s diabetes. Meanwhile, Claudia and Dawn are berated for organizing activities for camp participants who cannot afford to participate. Elsewhere, Kristy is in trouble for trying to take care of young campers, although she is not a counselor.
The second half of the final sees Laine and Stacey reconcile while being treated for rashes caused by poison ivy. Mary Anne’s play continues, and in the process, she shares a kiss with her crush, Logan (Rian McCririck). Later, a camper named Karen (Sophia Reid-Gantzert) is reported missing, but the club finds her. They learn that she is anxious at the camp, but assure her that her experience at the camp will improve. Upon their return, Dawn and Claudia protest against the financial exclusivity of the camp, which threatens Mary Anne’s play. In the end, the girls are disciplined by the camp counselors but plead their case, referring to their support for Karen. At the end of the season, they are appointed training advisers.
Season 2 doesn’t appear to be lacking in more dilemmas, friendship and growth for the club. I hope they can keep the Stoneybrook suburb under control.
