Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu
Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, has asked honorary doctorates to "lock" them into their drawers and use their respective titles.
"Let me emphasize again that these titles are not meant to be used. They are not doctors; they are honorary degrees. So, if you have one of these titles, lock them and use your correct title, "said Professor Owusu at the University of Ghana's doctoral forum organized by the School of Graduate Studies of the University of Ghana. University of Ghana, Legon, last Friday.
The forum, whose theme was "Promoting the Training of PhD Students in Ghana", aimed at bringing together stakeholders under one roof to reflect on the challenges of training PhD students in the country and how to accelerate it for meet the national demand for this level of human resources.
Professor Owusu expressed concern that several people in the country were using the title "Dr." even though they did not hold a doctorate, a situation he qualified d & # 39; unacceptable.
He said that a number of personalities who have obtained honorary degrees in the country but do not use them, quoted former presidents JJ Rawlings and JA Kufour and Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, as saying that some of these personalities.
"So, as a nation, let's be very careful about using these honorary degrees as titles," he said.
Teacher. Kwesi Yankah, Minister of State for Higher Education, stressed the rigorous level of work that doctoral candidates had to accomplish before receiving the title of "Doctor".
"The rigor of doctorate work, the high standards expected and the self-discipline it imposes require the candidate to elevate himself to new frontiers of knowledge building.
"It is not surprising, then, that some PhDs are vehemently protesting the unintentional omission of their respective titles or the misapplication of lower titles when they are introduced into official situations," said Professor Yankah. .
He explained that this was the reason why holders of fake doctoral degrees were sometimes ridiculed and publicly criticized.
"The false hypothesis of academic titles only devalues the discipline of the investiture of titles, blurs the distinction between mediocrity and excellence and deprives society of the possibility of isolating its cherished values.
"In academia, this compromises the pursuit of excellence and compromises the rigorous standards imposed by society to recognize its best brains," said Professor Yankah.
