MPs quarrel over the employment situation

Yesterday, the majority and minority in Parliament made fun of the unemployment rate and the number of jobs created by the government over the past two years.

Minority Members of Parliament (MP) claimed that as many as three million people had lost their jobs, according to a study by the Center for Socio-Economic Studies (CSS).

In addition, they said the government had failed to create the many jobs promised, while the NaBCo (Nation Builders Corps) would only provide temporary jobs.

But majority MPs said the Ministry of Employment had challenged the three million figures provided by the CSS with those of the Statistical Service of Ghana.

Therefore, the majority MPs, led by Sunyani West's New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP and Minister of Employment and Labor Relations, Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, and Majority Leader, Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, said the figures could not be substantiated by any evidence since the CSS had not yet responded to the figures of the GSS.

Quashigah said the NPP government has failed to carry out its flagship projects, such as One-District, One-Factory and One-Village, One-Dam, One-Dam.

Majority response

MPP of Prestea / Huni-Valley and Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Barbara Oteng-Gyasi said unemployment has been a problem in the country.

She said it was the severity of the unemployment situation that had led to the creation of the Association of Unemployed Graduates.

Ms. Oteng-Gyasi said that the NPP government has implemented policies such as One-District, One-Factory; Plant for food and create jobs to provide jobs for youth.

She said NaBCo was also an attempt to give a break to young graduates through a job.
