President Nana Akufo-Addo and President Faure Gnbadingbé
The President of Togo, Faure Gnbadingbé, met again with President Nana Akufo-Addo on the political crisis in her country.
Mr. Gnbadingbé, who was in Ghana for the meeting, briefed President Akufo-Addo on the progress made so far in the ongoing discussions.
President Akufo-Addo has been mandated by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to engage the warring parties in Togo.
He should also visit Togo again in the coming weeks.
A number of protests have been organized in Togo by opposition parties demanding that the country return to using the 1992 constitution which imposes limits on the presidential term.
Faure Gnbadingbé has been in power since 2005 after the death of his father, General Gnbadingbe Eyadema, who led Togo for nearly 50 years.
Anti-Gnbadingbe demonstrations last year saw hundreds of thousands of people taking to the streets of the country, killing several people and injuring many others.
The protests were launched by the main opposition group, the PNP and the CAP 2015, a coalition of five smaller opposition parties before expanding to 14 parties.
The 14 parties decided to suspend all forms of demonstrations and demonstrations aimed at compelling Faure Gnbadingbé to withdraw in March 2018.
This followed a meeting between President Akufo-Addo and representatives of the Togolese government.
