Comrade Ayuba Wabba, President of the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC), said the federal government is opposed to the new minimum wage.
Wabba pointed out that the private sector actually cooperates with the unions for the new salary proposed by the government.
Wabba said this in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Tuesday at the opening session of the 2018 meeting of the National Public Service Joint Bargaining Council.
He pointed out that the private sectors pay their workers more than those in the public service.
He said: "The private sectors have in fact supplanted the public sector in industrial relations and the collective bargaining model. Our experience during the negotiations on the new minimum wage has shown that private sector employers are more open and direct, moving negotiations towards mutual relations. acceptable figure, while the government continues to live in denial and even stop the conclusion of the negotiation.
"Private employers remain eager to maintain harmony in labor relations by supporting positions ensuring that workers get a significant wage increase, while the government continues to politicize our deal, devoid of genuine interest."
He added that state governments still owed salaries, pensions and government arrears despite several bailouts, reimbursements to the Paris Club, other initiatives and budget support.
