According to officials, an outbreak of scabies was confirmed in a Big Island hospital, affecting several employees.
Officials from the Kona Community Hospital said that the epidemic of skin disease caused by parasitic mites had been officially recognized last week.
The hospital did not specify the number of people infected.
According to the outbreak control division, scabies is caused by mites that burrow under the skin and lay eggs, causing intense itching. Symptoms may take about two to four weeks after infection.
The hospital said its procedures and protocols for infectious epidemics had been put in place.
Lisa Downing, director of infection prevention and health of hospital employees, told West Hawaii Today that the outbreak had been discovered after an "overabundance of people" had reported similar symptoms.
