The government has allocated $ 235 million for the construction of 10 fishing ports and coastal landings across the country.
Site construction should be approved by Parliament following Cabinet approval of the commercial and financial project agreement.
The ten identified sites where the landing sites and badociated facilities will be constructed include: Teshie in the Greater Accra region, Axim and Dixcove in the western region, Elmina, Winneba, Mumford, Senya-Bereku, Fetteh-Gomoah and Moree in the central region. and Keta in the Volta region.
At a press conference held in Accra on Wednesday, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said the development of the fish landing sites and ports was intended to ensure the launch and the safe landing of small-scale fishing and canoes.
"It also aims to create and maintain a hygienic environment for the processing and handling of fish, to prevent and minimize post-harvest losses and to add value to fish caught by artisbad fishermen," he said. declared.
Oppong Nkrumah noted that the fisheries sector played a major role in the national economy and contributed 3% of gross domestic product (GDP).
He added that the completion of the projects should increase the volume of fish exports compared to the current 12%, as well as the country's foreign exchange earnings.
