Colbert told Jon Stewart that an interview with Joe Biden in 2015 could be the reason he still has a job.

As shown by Stephen Colbert's occasional show, "The Late Show" made an unexpected exchange last night. His former "Daily Show" colleague, Jon Stewart, was sitting behind the desk (wearing a long-sleeved monochrome shirt, of course), asking Colbert questions.
In a revealing part of the evening, Stewart invited Colbert to explain about the tumultuous beginning of "The Late Show", while the number of viewers was low and the series was trying to reinvent the format. Part of the biggest challenge was juggling what viewers might have known about his "Colbert Report" character. On the interview side, Colbert said that a particular conversation helped him to turn this idea into reality.
During an interview in 2015 with then Vice President Joe Biden, the two men were able to exchange similar responses about what had happened in their respective families. After Biden's interview, Colbert remembers telling his producer: "This kind old man just gave me my show, because I know that there are times when it is absolutely necessary that I am myself. six months before we discovered this shit.
What Colbert did not mention is that it was the very first week of the series. The first part of the interview is lost in YouTube, but the second part is still available via the "Late Show" channel. What begins with a comic story about whether Biden will run for president will quickly turn into a discussion of Biden's son, Beau, who died earlier that year.
As Colbert said, it took a few months for the series to establish itself (although the theme song and intro is still the best it has ever had), but it's easy to understand why this conversation got stuck with the host years later.
