  • Tesla's cars have traveled a billion miles with the automatic semi-automatic autopilot feature enabled, the company said.
  • That's 10% of all Tesla miles traveled since 2012.
  • The autopilot was launched in 2015.

Tesla has taken an impressive step. The brand's vehicles have already traveled a billion kilometers with Autopilot, the company's semi-autonomous driving system, said Tesla.

This number represents 10% of all kilometers driven by Teslas since 2012, the year of the appearance of the Model S sedan on the market. The company said in a statement that the autopilot was only available since 2015, but Tesla had sold relatively few cars before the launch of the technology.

In 2017, for example, Tesla broke through 100,000 deliveries. By 2018, it is expected to surpbad this total, as its new Model 3 sedan is already on the market.

The autopilot hardware is built into all new Teslas, but the required software activation is an option of $ 5,000 at the time of purchase and $ 7,000 if selected later.

Tesla's goal is to make autopilot a complete autonomous driving system in the years to come. The technology uses cameras, sensors and computing power to replace the expensive laser radar systems used by General Motors' Cruise division and Alphabet's Waymo, both of which are looking to launch mobile phone services in 2018-2019.
