ACCRA, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) – Ghana on Wednesday launched a sub-national campaign to vaccinate more than 5 million people against yellow fever.
The seven-day campaign targets people aged 10 to 60 living in the high-risk districts of the African country. It is supported by the United Nations International Fund for Children's Relief, GAVI, a Global Alliance for Immunization and the World Health Organization (WHO). ).
Vaccination teams were badigned to various health facilities and selected points for the program.
Health authorities have called on the general public to report symptoms such as fever, jaundice, muscle aches, vomiting and loss of appetite at the nearest health center for treatment.
According to George Bonsu, head of the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), GAVI has approved 6 million doses of vaccine for the prevention campaign.
He said the Ghana Health Service (GHS), in collaboration with its development partners, was committed to ensuring that the country gets 100% yellow fever vaccination.
Pregnant women, people with egg allergy and people with reduced immunity (people living with cancer and HIV / AIDS) were excluded from the campaign.
Yellow fever is a viral disease transmitted by a bite of infected mosquitoes, mainly Aedes aegypti – a type of mosquito that breeds in the little water collected at the axils of the leaves (plantain leaves and banana leaves ).
The WHO report shows that about 200,000 cases of yellow fever were recorded each year, including 30,000 worldwide.
