In the best house in Britain described as "truly breathtaking" in "dream landscape"

These spectacular photos capture the "modest and sustainable home" that has been crowned House of the Year.

Lochside House, a modest cottage in the Scottish Highlands, was awarded this week by the Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba).

This is an off – grid property, the energy coming from the sun and water coming from a borehole.

Ben Derbyshire, president of Riba, described the house as "truly breathtaking" and as "the perfect addition to this dream landscape".

It lies at the edge of a tranquil lake in the West Highlands.

The property, designed by Haysom Ward Miller Architects, is owned by a ceramist and consists of three beautifully crafted buildings, tightly packed together and covered with burnt Scottish larch, protected by a dry stone wall.

Riba praised him for his "perfect integration into the wild and rugged landscape".

Takero Shimazaki, architect and chairman of the jury of the Riba House of the Year in 2018, said that there was an "overwhelming feeling of comfort, warmth and friendliness" inside of the House.

It was "amazing" that the owner's vision was not troubled by "remoteness and harsh weather conditions," added the judge.

Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud, who revealed the Channel 4 winner tonight, said the house was "the kind of architecture we can all learn from and it's a way to build that we , in Britain, become really good. "
