MADRID: The beginner coach, Thierry Henry, confided that he could learn a lot from the experienced coach of Atletico Madrid, Diego Simeone, marveling at the boundless energy of the Argentine in the 2-0 defeat of his team AS Monaco on Wednesday.
The goals of Koke and Antoine Griezmann have allowed Atletico to rank in the last 16 games of the Champions League and have ensured that Monaco in difficulty would find the last place in Group A, thus ending their slim hopes qualifying for the Europa League.
But Arsenal and the great French Henry, whose team have won only once and lost five of their eight matches since taking office after being an badistant coach of Belgium, were amazed by Simeone's palpitations.
"I have a lot to learn from Simeone, see how he works, his team won 2-0 and he never left his players alone, he kept shouting at them to stay focused and come back." Henry said at a post press conference match.
"That's why we saw Griezmann stop counter-attacks on the right side and in the center, which he brings to the team, which he previously had as a player, is incredible."
While Henry can now focus on his efforts to try to rescue the struggling Monaco, second in Ligue 1, in safety, Simeone aims to keep the pressure on Atletico for the title of La Liga and chart a possible path towards the final will be held in their brilliant Wanda Metropolitano stadium next June.
And after closely watching Simeone and his indefatigable team, Henry thinks Atletico is more than capable of winning for the first time the European elite competition after losing two finals in scary circumstances against Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016.
"He is so pbadionate about football that he always seems to be a player, and for me Simeone is a point of reference for all coaches," added Henry.
"Why could not they win it?" They were one second off the win (in 2014) and they lost another finals with the team and coach I saw today. Today, I say that they can certainly … The final is also in their place.
"Of course, you have to think of Juventus, Barcelona or Real Madrid, many teams could win the Champions League, and Atletico is one of them."
