Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (TOKYO: 6503) announced today that it has developed two technologies for gas-insulated switchgear: an arc-cooling technology that provides 25% improvement in interrupted electrical current in fluoride sulfur (SF).6) Gas insulated switchgears used in high voltage power supply systems and high density dielectric coating technology that improves insulation performance by 30% in high voltage conductors. Both technologies will contribute to the miniaturization of switching systems and the reduction of SF use.6 gas, whose global warming potential is 22,800 times higher than that of CO2.
Main characteristics
1) Arc cooling technology for switch improves current interruption performance by 25%
- The high pressure gas generated with a single coolant effectively cools and then turns off the conductive arc (conductive plasma) during a power interruption.
- The current flowing through the arc is reduced by the fact that the arcs are transformed into insulated gas, which improves the current interruptions by 25% compared to the conventional coolant-free process.
Details: The switch has two pairs of electrodes that remain closed during power supply. When the electrodes are open, the current can not be interrupted immediately because of the arc conductor. In the conventional process, the arc is extinguished by traversing it with gas to lower its temperature. The new Mitsubishi Electrics arc cooling technology uses a unique refrigerant to generate a high-pressure gas jet that effectively cools and then turns off the arc.
