The lawyers of the 14 people on trial for the murder of Major Maxwell Adam Mahama in Denkyira Obuasi, in the central region of the country, accused a prosecution witness of lying.
The accused's attorneys made this request when they questioned the witness yesterday in the High Court of Accra, presided over by Judge Mariama Owusu, Judge at the Court of Appeal, who also has an additional responsibility as a judge in the High Court.

The fifth prosecution witness, Solomon Sackey, said Tuesday in court saw four of the accused – Bernard Asamoah, aka Daddy, Joseph Kubi Appiah, Michael Anim and Akwasi Baah, actively participating in the killing of the officer.
According to him, he was at home in his carpentry workshop on the day of the incident when he learned that villagers had apprehended a thief. He stated that he had seized a stick and rushed to the scene with the intention of hitting said thief with it.
But, seeing the thief's anguish, he changed his mind, took pity on him, and then tried to stop others from hitting him further.

"You were among the killers"
During cross-examination, one of the defense lawyers, Mr. Bernard Shaw, told the witness that it was not true that he wanted to rescue Major Mahama, but that he had rather actively participated in the lynching.
"I suggest to you that you were hit hard because of your intense involvement in the lynching," Shaw said.
"No, my intention was to help him," replied the witness.
The lawyer then stated that the witness was one of eight other suspects who had been released by a district court following a prosecution request; he was therefore ready to do everything in his power to support his arguments.
"You know that giving testimony will give you your freedom," said Shaw.
"No, it's not true, I testify about what I saw that day," he said.
Mr. Theophilus Donkor, another defense lawyer, made similar charges against the witness.
The cross-examination will continue on January 29, 2019 in court.
