Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday called for calm, as he pledged to tackle the "monumental task" of repairing the devastated economy that provoked violent protests this week. .
"Meeting the economic challenges of Zimbabwe is a monumental task … We are moving in the right direction, we will get there," he said on Twitter. "I call all our brothers and sisters to calm and peace."
National demonstrations erupted Monday after the announcement by Mnangagwa that the price of fuel would more than double as the country's economic crisis worsens.
The demonstrators set fire to a police station, blocked roads and looted shops in Harare, Kadoma and Bulawayo towns, while security forces responded with rubber bullets and tear gas and reportedly used real balls.
"What we have witnessed is violence and vandalism instead of peaceful and legal protests," said Mnangagwa, adding that he was traveling to Russia and other countries to secure foreign investment in the country.
Mnangagwa published his statement on Twitter, although the country's Internet was closed with the apparent purpose of suppressing opposition and government criticism.
