Director Steven Soderbergh has been "retired" once, but these days are long in the past. He now has a new working relationship at Netflix that starts with his latest film, a sports drama that threatens to break the system that's professional basketball.
Big flying bird follows sports agent Ray Burke (André Holland) as he embarks on a bold plan to eliminate the NBA as we know it and give back control of the game to those who play it. Watch the Big flying bird trailer below.
Bird trailer flying high
This trailer is incredibly intriguing, mainly because of the suspense it creates around a plan that we do not quite understand yet. He discusses how this sports agent will upset the system that keeps team owners and players under their control, but Soderbergh's style gives this feeling a different turn style than the one he tackled Ocean's 11. It's almost like a bridge between this franchise and this political series K Street he did in 2003 with a little bit of Ballers thrown there.
Even more intriguing, this is the second film that Steven Soderbergh shot on an iPhone. Although the trailer contains some images that resemble those of a smartphone, the general public would never have known otherwise. I wonder how much shooting on an iPhone can save on production costs.
The rest of the Big flying bird the casting includes Zazie Beetz, Melvin Gregg, Sonja Sohn, Zachary Quinto, Kyle MacLachlan and Bill Duke, all working from a script of Moonlight writer Tarell Alvin McCraney. Plus, sports fans will want to keep an eye on the appearances of true NBA stars like Reggie Jackson, cities of Karl-Anthony and Donovan Mitchell.
In the midst of a professional basketball lockout, sports agent Ray Burke (Andre Holland) finds himself caught in the faceoff between the league and the players. His career is at stake, but Ray is playing higher. With only 72 hours to set up a bold plan, he foils all the powerful players as he discovers a loophole that could change the game forever. The result raises the question of who owns the game – and who should do it.
