MasterCard will not let companies charge you after free trials for physical products

Here's how the new MasterCard protections will work: Sign up for a free trial and enter your MasterCard number for your payment information. At the end of this free trial, the merchant will be required to send you an SMS or e-mail informing you that you will have to pay to continue the subscription. This message should include the cost of the subscription, the payment date and the name of the merchant clearly presented so that you know exactly who you are dealing with. The message should also include instructions on the cancellation procedure if you decide that you would be better without it.

MasterCard, however, is a bit underhand about this news. A few hours after initially posting the news on this new service, the company made a stealth modification to its blog post, which reads as follows: "Nobody wants to be dissatisfied with a physical produced after paying for it. For some consumers, a free trial is a great way to test a new product and become familiar with it before making a purchase decision. And with so many merchants offering free trials for physical productsthey become the new norm. "The two bold sentences were not originally listed in the blog article, as noted The edge and confirmed by a glance at Google's cached version of the page. As such, it seems that this protection does not help customers to try digital subscriptions and not to pay a recurring cost if they forget to cancel.

Even if you choose to allow the merchant to charge you so you can continue to use his service, the company must provide you with monthly receipts showing the monthly cost. These monthly receipts will also include a guide on termination of the subscription.

Update from 17/01/19 to 15:40 ET: This message has been updated to note that MasterCard has modified its original advertisement by indicating that this transaction applies only to physical products and not to digital subscriptions.
