Summit comes as a result of COP24's international climate negotiations
The provisional program of the 2019 African Climate Week, to be held March 18-22 in Accra, Ghana, has been posted online and presents a dynamic business calendar that will show increased ambition on the whole continent. All details about the topics and speakers will follow later.
Organized by the Government of Ghana, the event will be held in the aftermath of COP24's international climate negotiations, which culminated with the finalization of the "Katowice Climate Package" on 15 December, also known as the work program. of the Paris Agreement. This is the first major climate-related event of 2019 that will promote the program's "guidelines" as a foundation for the concrete implementation of the Paris Agreement.
The timely completion of these operational elements – and the rise of the national ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to adapt to the inevitable consequences of climate change and supporting developing countries to act in favor of the climate – will be essential to achieve net net emissions by 2050 and, ultimately, by keeping the global average temperature as close as possible to 1.5 ° C.
In terms of climate action, 2019 is already hailed as a year of ambition, as the world has until 2020 for countries to come back to the table to revise their plans national action plans for the climate (also called "nationally determined contributions" or "NDCs"). That's why UN Secretary-General António Guterres convenes a landmark summit in New York in September to urge world leaders to make a stronger commitment to reducing emissions and building resilience.
Recognizing that this Summit was "the flagship event" of the year – and recognizing that Regional Climate Weeks are the obvious steps to accelerate the pace in developing countries on the eve of September – the Week African climate is firmly aligned with the New Summit. York event – on the one hand, by aligning its main theme "Action for Climate in Africa: a race we can win" with that of the September Summit and, on the other hand, by selecting three of the six "domains" "transformation" of the Summit at the center of its thematic sessions. At the same time, the high-level segment, to be held on Wednesday, 20 March, will bring together ministers and senior officials – including the United Nations Executive Secretary on Climate Change, Patricia Espinosa – and will focus on areas such as that: visions for the improvement of nationally determined contributions (NDC); and implementation; carbon pricing and markets, as well as the implementation of the ambition cycle in the Africa region.
Governments, the private sector and other non-party stakeholders will gather in Accra throughout this climate week – which will also include two days of badociated events on March 18 and 19 – to promote critical work in the three areas of transformation through the three levers of politics, technology and finance.
The African Climate Week is the first of three annual regional climate events this year – the last two being Climate Week in Latin America and the Caribbean and Asia-Pacific Climate Week – information on each of these events will be published shortly. Climate Week in Africa is orchestrated by a number of key partners, including the World Bank Group, the African Development Bank, the West African Development Bank, the CRTC, UNEP, the UNEP-UNEP Partnership, UNDP, IETA, the Marrakech Partnership and the UN on climate change.
In general, the collective goal of these climate weeks is to support the implementation of country NDPs under the Paris Agreement and climate action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. In so doing, they bring together a wide range of international actors from the public and private sectors around a common goal of enhancing climate action.
