(HealthDay) – The prevalence of undiagnosed asthma is 20.2% among urban teens, according to a study published online Jan. 15 Journal of Urban Health.
Dr. Jean-Marie Bruzzese of the Columbia University School of Nursing in New York and colleagues examined the correlations between undiagnosed asthma and demographic and neighborhood factors at the individual level in a cohort of 10,295 teens in New York. Addresses were provided for a subset of 6,220 adolescents that could be geocoded in US Census Tracts.
The researchers found that the prevalence of undiagnosed asthma was 20.2%. The odds of being undiagnosed were higher among girls (adjusted odds ratio, 1.25). Americans of Asian origin had a higher risk of being undiagnosed than non-Hispanic white teenagers (adjusted odds ratio, 1.41), while Latin Americans and African Americans / Blacks had lower risk of being undiagnosed respectively). There was no significant difference in risk for Latinos and African Americans / Blacks. The risk of being undiagnosed was reduced for people living in a neighborhood where the concentration of Latinos was lower than that of non-Latinos whites (adjusted odds ratio, 0.66).
