"Basically, the strength of the design lies in the tremendous success of the company without PrimeSense Israeli factory," said Allan Yogasingam, Technical Marketing Manager at UBM TechInsights. "They provided the most innovative part of Kinect with its image processor, audio and video interface."
The Kinect includes four audio microphones on the front console that can locate the user in hearing projection, according to the UBM TechInsights badysis. The system also detects motion using an infrared camera (Clbad 1, indicating that it is not light-emitting diode) and two image sensors, the company said. The image sensor includes a 32-bit color VGA RGB resolution sensor and a 16-bit monochrome QVGA sensor, UBM TechInsights said.
"Future applications of this technology could be fascinating," Yogasingam said. "I see that this is being incorporated into the TVs, allowing users to switch channels by waving their hand, essentially replacing the remote."
According to UBM TechInsights, about $ 17 of the PrimeSense nomenclature, including cameras, microphones and processors, is worth about $ 17. UBM TechInsights said Microsoft plans to resell the Kinect system for $ 149 and make substantial profits on each unit.
According to Microsoft, UBM TechInsights estimates that Microsoft will sell 5 million Kinect units by Christmas, which will boost PrimeSense, Marvell, TI, STMicro and other system component vendors.
Kinect is Microsoft's first foray into video games, a category popularized – and dominated – by Nintendo's Wii. Sony Corp. has also recently proven itself in the ring with a $ 99 package for its PlayStation 3, Sony Move, which UBM TechInsights performed a disbadembly badysis last month.
UBM TechInsights is a division of United Business Media, the parent company of EE Times.
