The NFL has announced who would sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl LIII next month. Gladys Knight, the "Empress of Soul," will sing the melody after Pink last year.
Knight has won seven Grammy Awards and is known for such songs as "Midnight Train to Georgia" and "That's what my friends are for". Knight is from Atlanta, Georgia, this year's Super Bowl site at the Mercedes-Benz stadium. The NFL interviewed Knight about his interpretation of the national anthem this year. She hopes that this anthem will have even more weight this year given the controversy and discussions about racial inequality and Colin Kaepernick.
Knight developed in an interview with Variety, telling the site that she was saddened by the current climate and by the entanglement of the anthem.
"I understand that Mr Kaepernick is protesting against two things: police violence and injustice," she said. "It is unfortunate that our national anthem has been drawn into this debate while the distinctive meanings of the national anthem and the struggle for justice must be independent of one another.
"I am here today and Sunday, February 3 to give voice to the hymn, to defend this historic choice of words, the way it unites us when we hear it and to free it. the same prejudices and struggles that I have I have fought long and hard all my life, whether it is to walk down the halls, to walk with our social leaders, to use my voice for good – j & # 39; have been at the center of this battle longer than most of those who have expressed their opinion of winning the right to sing the anthem of our country on a stage as big as the Super Bowl LIII. "
She added, "I pray that this national anthem will bring us together in a way never seen before and that we can go ahead and unravel those truths that matter so much to us all."
In other news from the Super Bowl LIII, it was recently confirmed that Maroon 5 will be leading the halftime show, Big Boi and Travis Scott being also about to play as that second role. Jay-Z, Cardi B and Rihanna refused to play at the Super Bowl in solidarity with Kaepernick. Kaepernick made the headlines when he knelt at the national anthem in protest of racial inequality in the United States. He has not played professionally since 2017.
Scott told Billboard that he had agreed to play at the Super Bowl only if the football league had agreed to donate to an organization fighting for social justice. Scott himself donated $ 500,000 to Dream Corps.
