An elderly cloth seller who was photographed reading the newspaper despite the acronym "I'm blind" next to him spoke on his side of the story.
The photo, which several Stomp contributors sent to Stomp, was first published in a Facebook group with the caption: "Spot the error".
He shows the old man reading newspapers sitting outside the Tampines MRT station. A trolley of tissues can be seen next to him, with a red sign that says:
"I am blind, unable to work
I can only sell tissue paper
Help me, please.
Thank you for your support"
The image then went viral on Facebook and WhatsApp, and many netizens pointed out its irony. Some even described this man as a cheater and accused him of claiming to be blind.
Reporters from the daily Shin Min Daily News went to the scene and located the man, identified as Liu Zhenxian, 72 years old.
Mr. Liu said that he has been selling facial tissue in the area for less than a year. He usually arrived just before noon and left before 8 pm
Asked about speculation about his sight, Mr. Liu showed reporters his certification of the Singaporean Association of the Visually Impaired.
According to Mr. Liu, he is completely blind to the right eye, injured by a marble ball in his twenties.
During this time, the vision of his left eye is weak due to the deterioration of his age.
As such, it is difficult for him to see in the dark.
Mr. Liu likes to read newspapers when lighting is enough to pbad the time, although he can not see every little word clearly.
When he was told that netizens suspected him of being a cheater, Mr. Liu seemed to be lost.
He added: "I hope people will not draw conclusions without evidence."
