The best of the 2019 North America International Auto Show • Gear Patrol

The unofficial theme of this year's North American International Auto Show is "kickbad". There is not a ton of news that we have not seen coming (we are watching you, Toyota Supra), but if you take inventory of all the big launches and unveilings you will see that it was nothing but sports cars and overlanders.

In recent years, the landscape was rather bleak: brand after brand, nothing less than crossovers and crawlers. If the Detroit auto show in 2019 suggests a year or two, it seems that manufacturers are also tired of monotonous cars built in committee. If it's a new SUV, you can be sure it will have an adventurous spirit; if it's a sedan or a coupe, count it on a ridiculous number of horses or name the second house on the circuit. 2019 will be a good year for cars and trucks. This is the best of the 2019 North America International Auto Show.

Cadillac

Cadillac was the subtle surprise of NAIAS this year. GM's luxury brand has launched its first three-row Sub-Escalade SUV, which is not necessarily impressive. But Caddy has also added to the rare breed, the super-US sedan, the CT6-V, which comes with a 4.2-liter V8 delivering 550 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque.

Ford

A new explorer, with an "ST" finish, and a GT500, it's cool and all … but the crowd really hoped to get a glimpse of the 2020 Bronco. Nevertheless, the prospect of a 700 horsepower-plus Mustang is quite soothing.

Jeep

The highly anticipated Jeep Gladiator was unveiled at the end of last year, but seeing it in the metal, with a pair of KTM enduros in the back, is terribly exciting. Jeep knows he has a fantastic adventure vehicle and it's nice to see them show this show so aggressively.

Kia

Kia continues to surprise the industry year after year. What was once a company renowned for its conquering German luxury copies is now a brand with a real reputation for "upsetting" the status quo with remarkable derogations such as the Stinger GT. But now, the Korean manufacturer puts on the market what looks like a three-row SUV that is quite capable and bold in style.

Lexus

Lexus plays smart and relies on two lines of extremely successful models. Even though the LC 500 Convertible is just a "concept", it's pretty good to say that Lexus will market it. And why not? The coupe was in many ways a huge success for the brand. The track-based model RC F also debuted, another first for the luxury brand and the BMW M4.

Lincoln

The Lincoln Aviator is nothing new, but Ford's luxury brand is currently enjoying a resounding success that deserves an honorable mention on its own.

Subaru

Admittedly, the current generation of Subaru WRX is older than us all, but it's exciting to see the brand finally recognize its fan base in the United States. Last year, we launched the first Type-RA model and we now have the first S model: the S206. It's the best of what Subaru has to offer. Hope this indicates that the WRX is now completely drained and that a new generation is coming.

Toyota

Toyota was easily the star of the show this year. The Supra is the least well-kept secret of the last five years, but that did not prevent the official revelation from attracting a crowd of spectators standing. Everyone may have been tired of all the leaks of images and teasers, but as soon as the cover of the Toyota Supra 2020 was removed, the excitement in the room was palpable. And let's not forget the new spicy TRD versions of the Toyota and Toyota Camry and Avalon sedans.

Volkswagen

Another quiet success at NAIAS this year. Not to mention the all-new Pbadat is not a problem, quite the contrary. The discreet sedan looks more mature than ever, drawing inspiration from Aerteon and its top clbad Audi brothers.
