With Aquaman exceeding the billion dollar box office mark, DC Comics and Warner Bros. have the wind in their sails after the misfires of Justice League, Batman v Superman, and Suicide team.
It seems that the direction of DC movies is finally clear after many changes of direction and creation. Toby Emmerich, President of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, talked about the future of DC movies, claiming that they would no longer pursue Marvel Studios' approach.
"We all feel like we've taken a course, we play according to DC's reading book, which is very different from Marvel's book," Emmerich told the Hollywood Reporter. "We are much less focused on a shared universe, we take it film by film, each film is its own equation and its own creative entity. If you had to say one thing about us, it's that it's must always act of the administrators. "
Emmerich also spoke of Disney box office dominance, which seems to be inevitable for the New Year with Fox. Warner Bros. will not pursue them and the executive has clarified which projects would remain their center of interest for the future.
"We are very focused on DC, on the rise of animation and on movies that contribute to social conversation," said Emmerich, referring to the success of 2018 such as Crazy Rich Asians and A star is born.
But Aquaman That's what pushed the studio above last year, becoming the first billion dollar image since The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey created more than five years ago. It's a mbadive victory, and Aquaman became the most successful DC Comics film of the modern era and is currently following Christopher Nolan's The black knight gets up.
It seems like a sequel is obvious as a result of this huge success. And star Jason Momoa has a lot of ideas on how to proceed.
"I definitely have an opinion," Momoa told Syfy Wire. "Even when we were shooting Aquaman, I have the openness of Aquaman 2 ready. I walked in and started it at [producer Peter] Saffron, and I launched it at [Warner Bros. chairman] Toby Emmerich. They loved it. It's great … But yes, I have plans for Aquaman 2. "
Director James Wan does not know if hell will engage in a sequel at this point, as he told ComicBook.com.
"I mean, loving the people I work with goes a long way," said Wan. "That's the reason I came back when I Insidious 2. But it's strange for me, because I do not know what I want to do for the first time in my career. I felt like Aquaman checked a lot of boxes for me. I want to do another action movie after Furious 7, I wanted to make a world-making film, and I wanted to make a superhero movie, and Aquaman literally checked all these boxes for me. And so now, I'm in that kind of place, I kind of go back and I make a smaller film maybe as a next film, something a little more intimate. Or if I can make a personal film, but it may be on a larger scale. I am not sure at this point. "
Aquaman now plays in theaters.
