Nutrition Hub starts a wave of nutrition bars in the Memphis area

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (AP) – Salted Caramel, Reese's, Blueberry Muffins, Cinnamon Toast and Strawberry Cheesecake. The menu of the new Nutrition smoothie bars reads like an ice cream shop or bakery, and not as a health food store.

Although the flavors may be sinful, the shakes are not. Each protein drink contains only 200 calories and only 11 to 15 grams of carbohydrates. As an added bonus, each shake contains 24 grams of protein and 21 vitamins and minerals.

"It's all you need for a healthy meal," said Seth McMurry, co-owner of Nutrition Hub and his Nutrition Bar.

This new concept of smoothie bar that is spreading in the Memphis area started as a family affair.

Seth McMurry and his wife, Cymber, along with his brother Nathan McMurry and his wife, Katelyn, opened The Nutrition Hub in Germantown in April. It was the first of these smoothie bars and meal replacement stores to open in the area.

In September, the couples opened Nutrition Bar in Laurelwood, East Memphis.

The names of the two companies are slightly different, but each offers a similar menu. The focus is on shakes, teas and aloe shots.

The shakes are creamy, hearty and surprisingly tasty. They taste like a sin-filled milkshake, not a healthy meal replacement.

"Protein shakes have been part of our lives since we are athletes," Katelyn said. "These are healthy, not chalky and have the taste of a dessert."

Protein shakes are made with water and ice as the base. Using water instead of milk helps to limit calories.

Each shake is Herbalife Nutrition's Healthy Meal Protein Powder and Shake Mix Blend.

"We currently have three different protein powders and eleven healthy meal flavors," said Seth, explaining how they can create as many shake flavors. The current menu has around 40 flavors and Seth is working on adding about 20 more.

"These shakes bring you everything you need for a complete meal without the calories," said Seth.

"Our shakes are a way to get a lot of protein in a meal with few calories," Katelyn added. "When exercising, you need protein to strengthen your muscles."

So what to order? Start with some of the owners' favorites. Katelyn's favorite flavors are blueberry muffin and cinnamon toast. Nathan opts for the Elvis, a blend of chocolate, peanut butter and banana or salted caramel.

At $ 8 per shake, it's a quick and affordable fast food.

Tea at the Nutrition Bar and Hub is not your traditional Earl Gray tea or chamomile tea. Instead, it is an energetic tea with a fruity flavor that can be ordered cold or hot.

"That gives you extra energy like a double espresso, but unlike an espresso, it's a clean, natural energy, so you'll have no worries," Seth said. stevia-based teas that contain only 15 calories and no added sugar.

Each tea is made from a combination of a tea and an energy supplement. Seth recommends Pomegranate + Pomegranate, Chai + Orange and Pomegranate + Orange.

You can also add a "reminder" to your tea. They offer seven different boosters that range from a collagen "beauty booster" to an "immune booster" with vitamin C and zinc.

The teas are at $ 4, with a supplement for boosters.

When you visit the bar or nutrition center, Seth recommends starting with a shot of aloe.

Made from aloe vera, this shot is for intestinal health. The benefits include soothing the stomach, relieving indigestion and promoting nutrient absorption.

The blows come from mango, mandarin and cranberry and cost just $ 1.

Unlike aloe water, which can contain pieces of aloe plants resembling jelly, these shots are smooth and come down easily.

"Clients told me that they were able to stop taking acid reflux medications after taking aloe daily," Seth said.

Customers can also buy products to make their own shakes, teas and even aloe shots at home.

As part of the Herbalife Nutrition sales program, business owners such as McMurrys can receive a percentage of sales from other businesses using their account to get started.

"As they are more successful, we are more successful," Katelyn said of this winning solution to help others open a similar concept. "Plus, the percentage comes from Herbalife, not directly from their company."

In addition to the health aspect, Seth said that one of the main reasons the family had started the business was to create a community.

"Every site has a big bar so people can sit and talk with each other and with us," he said. "I know most of my clients here in Germantown by name."

Each location has comfortable seating, both at the bar and throughout the store. The atmosphere encourages guests to relax for a moment while sipping their shake.

"We are all athletes and we have been drinking protein shakes for years," Seth said. "We have friends in Little Rock who have a similar business and we wanted to create the same thing here in Memphis."

Katelyn said that they also found a great need in Memphis. "We are trying to make a difference by offering a healthy and fast alternative."

McMurrys develop their business by helping others open similar concepts.

Last year, the McMurrys partnered with another family to open a third site on Main Street. Downtown Nutrition is a common property owned by Preston and Jackie Butts and Anthony Hollins, Jackie's brother.

The menu and the conviviality of the new location, open at the beginning of December, remind you of the two other places. Jackie described the business relationship with the McMurrys as follows: "Each of them is an independent property but we all work together."

"I liked the community aspect of the company, the health awareness and the impact it can have on a community," Preston said. "In addition, we live downtown and we wanted to provide a great product to the underserved health and fitness community in downtown Memphis."

"We are going to open a second site for us in Oxford, Mississippi, in the month," said Preston.

The new location will be much larger than the downtown location, with an area of more than 2,000 square feet. It is located at 1101 Merchants Drive, opposite the Dick's Sporting Goods. Ole Miss students will be happy to know that the shakes will be featured on the college meal plan.
