These days, true fans of crime are spoiled for choice. Netflix produces must-have docuseries like Make a murderer, Murder Mountain, and The innocent man. Cable channels like Investigation Discovery and Oxygen Air feature virtually uninterrupted murders and kidnappings. Podcasts like "My Favorite Murder" are all the rage. We could say that they all have a debt towards Mysteries unsolved.
When Unsolved Mysteries created in 1987, real crime was not the ubiquitous genre it is today. But the show and its host, Robert Stack, have made crime, as well as stories about ghosts and extraterrestrials, entertainment.
Netflix plans to restart Unsolved Mysteries
The original series of Unsolved Mysteries lasted until 1999 and new and updated episodes continued to be aired until 2010, although Dennis Farina finally took over after the death of the original host Robert Stack. But even after the end of the new episodes, the series has remained popular, with a website featuring case updates and an active community on Facebook.
Now, the original producers are joining Netflix to relaunch the show. The streaming service will air a "modern interpretation of the clbadic series" that "will maintain the feeling of coldness that viewers liked from the original". Twelve episodes are planned. Each of them will have a separate mystery or unresolved crime, and viewers will be invited to share any information they have that could help resolve the case.
Where to look at the original Unsolved Mysteries
New episodes of Unsolved Mysteries will try to recreate the troubling atmosphere of the original series, which highlights stories of unresolved murders, missing persons, ghosts, lost loves and unexplained phenomena. Although the memorable theme song is certain to be heard, it will not have the animal, the iconic host Robert Stack, whose threatening narrative ended up being an important part of the attraction of the series. But fans of the original can still watch the old episodes.

Made Unsolved Mysteries to really help the police to catch criminals?
During his initial run, Unsolved Mysteries made it clear that it was entertainment, not serious journalism. A disclaimer even reminded viewers that it was "not a news show". But despite the hokey stories about UFOs and crop circles, the program was making a real effort to get information on real crimes that viewers might be able to help solve. Perhaps surprisingly, the series has been very successful in generating leads that did exactly that. (You can always share tips on old cases online.)
According to the show's website, about 50% of the cases involving wanted fugitives have been resolved, most with the help of television viewers. In addition, more than 100 separated family members were reunited after the broadcast of their stories.
After an episode aired, a maid at the hotel informed the police of the location of a fugitive scammer. In another article, tips from viewers led to the arrest of a man suspected of committing a murder committed 17 years earlier. Maybe restarting Netflix will have the same success in solving cold cases.
