KHAR: After three polio cases in the Bajaur tribal district have been detected in the last three months, local government officials and the health department have pledged to adopt an effective strategy to eliminate definitely the disabling disease of the region.
Deputy Commissioner Usman Mehsud and doctor Wazir Khan Safi, district surgeon, said at a press conference in the run-up to the three-day polio campaign, which will begin Monday.
Mr Mehsud admitted that the detection of polio cases had wiped out the hopes of the administration to release Bajaur from polio. He described as unfortunate the detection of polio cases, saying however that they were optimistic to rid the area of the disease as soon as possible.
Mr. Mehsud emphasized the need for an innovative strategy to eliminate the disabling disease of the tribal district. He added that he had asked health officials to involve elders and ulemas to get the desired results.
Dr Wazir Khan, District Surgeon, said on this occasion that the Department of Health had increased the number of polio teams.
