After more than three and a half years in office, President Muhammadu Buhari has a different meaning for different people. Indeed, opinions are divided among Nigerians on whether the president has done enough to keep his promises to repair the economy, fight corruption and ensure security in the country. . And, just weeks before the next presidential election, the jury must decide on its performance so far and decide if it deserves a second term.
Emmanuel Umohinyang is a man who has an unshakable confidence in the re-election of Buhari to Nigerians. And he said to anyone who wants to hear that there is no reason why, based on the existing performance indices, Nigerians do not vote for Buhari on February 16th. Umohinyang is the president of the Re-Elect Buhari Movement movement, RBM, which is currently participating in a national campaign to mobilize Nigerians to re-elect the president.
During a recent meeting with Sunday Vanguard, he took his time to explain in detail the elements that motivated the decision to form the group and why he continues to argue that it is in the interest Nigerians give four more years to Buhari. According to him, by adopting Buhari, the members of the RBM were just following in the footsteps of their mentor, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, who in 2007 "called us and told us that we must now support current president of Nigeria. Muhammadu Buhari ".
He stressed that Gani had approved Buhari for the 2007 elections by raising his hand. Umohinyang did not stop there.
"So we also took our time outside of this support from our great mentor and leader. We took the time to look at Nigeria from 1999 to 2015. And we can not blame this position of the scholarly lawyer. We watched the events too. First, the arrival of President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999, this administration had been there for eight years. And Atiku was his vice. We also observed the brief period (administration) of the late Musa Yar'Adua; we also attended the five years of former president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. And I think the last administration has given us the zeal to say that we must not continue to sit on the fence. Let us also join and make sure our country does not behave as the elite wishes, "said the group's leader.
"On this note, in June, we felt that we should see what we could do as a group to help the country move away from the path of destruction that we find ourselves. And on that note, we weighed all our weight alongside President Muhammadu Buhari as an APC candidate. And to the glory of God and the support of Nigerians, coupled with the technology introduced in 2015, he won the elections. "
Explaining more about RBM's involvement in the current campaign for Buhari to be re-elected, he said, "The re-elected Buhari Movement has become a child of fate. We sat down and decided that we needed to project the work of the current administration. As you know, RBM may be a political pressure group, but some members belong to different political parties. and some are not even members of APC. Myself, I am not an APC member. So, we have a goal; and this objective is to help the President to be reelected. Not for a particular gain, but simply to ensure that the model adopted by the government to rebuild and restructure our country is maintained. I think that's one of the reasons why RBM was created. And that's why RBM exists. I would also like to badure you that, by God's grace, we will also invite Nigerians to re-elect the president on February 16th. We will also hold a press conference during which we will stop the RBM. because it is not there to mobilize the support of the candidates for the positions of governors of the parties. Mr. Chairman, we will focus on this issue. And I can badure you that attention will not be broken. "
Asked to evaluate the president after three and a half years in office and to justify why he thinks the president deserves a second term, he quickly said, "If you look at what the president has done between now and then, you can not not compare that with the lost 16 years of the People's Democratic Party. "
Speaking on details, he cited the ongoing construction of roads throughout the country, adding, "We have traveled the country; we do not depend on government data to speak on behalf of the government. We have structures ranging from the national coordinator to the zone coordinator, the state coordinator, the supervisors of the councils, the units … All we have to do is to organize a meeting, to convey a message . go around your unit, turn around your neighborhood, your local government; send us photos of what this administration has done. And we have these pictures. I'm talking about live food, photos … And we can testify, President Buhari has done extremely well in three and a half years. What PDP could not do in 16 years. It's quite normal that we say, okay, give him a chance to do a second four-year period. And that's what we retained. So I say that, from what the government has done, it deserves our support. And we, members of the RBM, are doing everything in our power to get the president to get a second term and do more for Nigeria. "
He went on to say that the Buhari government had done well compared to its immediate predecessor, led by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
"Fortunately, I come from the South-South of the country, even if I do not do ethnic politics. In 2010, when former President Goodluck Jonathan went to campaign in the state of Anambra, he stopped at the Onitsha Bridge and declared that he was not ending the second bridge of Niger in 2015, he went into exile. As much as we loved Jonathan as our brother, that was not enough; That's why the country is where it is because anyone who comes here caresses it; even when he does what we know to be wrong; we continue to support without necessarily calling that person to order or telling him where he is going. To his credit, he (Jonathan) may have been good enough to say. But maybe the government has been hijacked … But under Jonathan, we've seen the worst type of government you can imagine. Under this administration we have seen corruption develop in the legs, wear clothes and go around the system. It is a government that has largely authorized the opening of the door and windows of the treasure. All sorts of shenanigans were there. This is also the reason why so many people were killed for lack of money to get weapons.
"It would have been convenient for me to say," I'm from this area, let me see what I can do to protect my brother. But who is my brother? It's the man who puts food on my table. He is a man whose policy has helped to stimulate the development of our country. He is a man who will make our education work so that I do not have to take my children to private schools. It's my brother. This is not where a man comes from. I do not think the people of Otueke, where he comes from, can point to what they liked about the Jonathan administration. So we need to start focusing on those who can perform. who has the capacity to develop the country. Because we are raising children who will continue where we will stop. And if this country goes on like that, then we dropped our kids. What are we going to tell them, it's our contribution to changing the narrative. So these are the problems, "said Umohinyang.
But recalling the mediocre note that many Nigerians, including the opposition political party, the PDP, have praised President Buhari for his ability to meet the challenges of corruption and insecurity, particularly since the recent uprising of the insurgency, the RBM leader has reacted with anger. stung by a bee or a scorpion.
"It's a pity: It's ridiculous to talk about the PDP because you and I were in this country when Force headquarters was blown up, when the United Nations House in Abuja was blown up; you from the Nyanya explosion.Elgal Square was avoided for several years by the president.Junathan was even afraid to organize a party inside the Villa. It was so bad So when PDP starts talking to you about the efforts they've made to reduce insurgency, it's a lie from hell, because they can only say that to themselves, we know the insurgents have occupied several local governments in the northeast, their flags were everywhere, they simply did not collect taxes, if you failed to pay, you were treated, our constitution was desecrated. the whole world that Nigeria's sovereignty was threatened So, I do not see what they did against the insurrection. They have failed miserably and I know that Nigerians are people who have a permanent memory. We know what happened under PDP in terms of security.
"This administration may not have gotten 100% right … but one thing you can not take away from President Muhammadu Buhari, is that he got eighty-five for hundred of security. And I challenge the PDP to bring his scorecard to Nigerians to compare it. When you talk about corruption, it is under PDP that we have seen all the ways of crime; Under PDP, we saw a man convicted of direct theft, get exploited by the president of a country and be told to no longer sin. Under PDP, it was official for you to fly provided you do not get caught. And even when you have been caught, you are asked not to sin anymore. Under PDP, theft in public was so widespread. So, when PDP talks about corruption, you can not compare that era to today 's. The fact that it is to be feared that if you are caught flying under this administration, you will be treated is an advantage for Buhari because we have not seen it under PDP. At that time, you could fly and share it with those in authority. It was under PDP, we had the famous family business in terms of public funds. But this administration has shown its commitment and that if you fly, you will be treated. We pray to God never to be brought back to this time; no sensible Nigerian will want to return to this time.
"Imagine their current campaign slogan, which says: Put Nigeria back to work. I do not know where it comes from because, if you ask me, Nigeria will be corrupt again. We must avoid bringing people without character to rule over us. Let me tell you that Nigerians are aware of what happened during the PDP era. this evil time is over and it is definitely over. If the PDP decides to change its name, it's not really the party we're talking about, it's the actors who have played a key role in the destruction of our system. And these same people are telling us now that they are back to rule us. And I can badure you that will come on April 16; Nigerians will make their appearance and ensure that these people do not find their way, whether through the front door, the back door and the side door or even through the window that returns to power.
But he recalled that many of the people accused of ruining the country are in the APC, he said: "You have raised a valid argument, that some of the alleged robbers are currently at the APC. You see, it's very easy for someone to argue. But it is up to you to prove what you have alleged. This is one. Two, those people you said that they came back to APC, was their case arrested? Because the constitution provides freedom of badociation. And I do not think that if a man wants to move from one party to another, you will say that you do not have to enter because you have a case in court without you being sentenced. Even those who have been sentenced have the right to badociate with whoever they want. All I'm saying is that there is not a single person who has gone to PCA and is on trial, but this chair has said, "Free yourself; or ordered the EFCC, CPIC or any other security agency to stop his investigation and his trial. I do not know of any cases that the government has said that the fact that it came to join us, your sins are forgiven. People are still on trial. This government has not at any time warned the Attorney General of the Federal Government to sign a record on behalf of anyone who has pleaded for him in a court that has defected to the PCA. I can badure you that this president will never do that. What we appreciate is that we have an honest man in the saddle. It's the difference between the last 16 years.
Said that his position contradicts the popular belief that the president does not respect court decisions based on examples cited, he strongly argued that this was not the case. He also disagreed with some people's badertion that President Buhari was guilty of being a partisan in his anti-corruption war, particularly the selective manner in which opposition politicians are pursued while members of the opposition APC accused are not treated the same way, including those who have defected from other parties.
According to him: "The president is not a lawyer. And that's why he has AGF. I do not agree with you to say that he has a habit of disobeying court decisions. The reasons are obvious. I think the chair has come to speak on the issue of national security. And you and I may not be able to know the information he has about insecurity. The people you mentioned are those that security agencies consider a risk to the country. And if a court has decided on a bill, it is the duty of the AGF to advise the president on the best approach to reach such a declaration. Thus, the president can act on the opinion of the AGF.
"With regard to the statement that some former governors who moved to APC have been returned the properties, I am not sure that this is so. Because if someone goes through a lawsuit, I do not see where the government will intervene. We may have to go back to find other reasons why their properties have been returned to them.
"The president is a converted democrat and he showed it by the way he ran the country. And he showed by his conduct during the last three and a half years that he quickly learned to be a democrat ".
