MANILA: Filipino boxing fans in Manila cheered on Manny Pacquiao's victory against Adrien Broner on Sunday, comparing their 40-year-old idol to a "good wine".
The Filipinos were convinced that their champion Pacquiao would easily defend his welterweight title in Las Vegas. The boxer did not disappoint, winning unanimously the decisive victory against an eleven-year-old opponent.
From the kids to the elderly, the screaming fans and the pumping fists gathered to watch the fight unfold in the country's gyms at free traditional events.
"Manny Pacquiao is like a good wine, he has improved over the years, he can still punch for a 40-year-old man," said Twitter user @gemmedgem.
"I was jumping for joy at seeing him because Manny Pacquiao is really my idol Filipinos are happy and we are honored to have him as a boxer," said 56-year-old Jenny Gitgano at AFP. after attending the match in the capital.
Pacquiao, nicknamed the "Filipino National Fist", is considered a hero whose pbading from school dropout to being the millionaire boxing world champion in eight unprecedented weight divisions is a huge source of pride.
During his youth, Pacquiao's fighting paralyzed the country. The authorities stated that trafficking and criminality had virtually ceased.
As crowds lightened at the twilight of Pacquiao's career, hordes of fans always gathered in covered courts and even military camps to witness the fight that took place Sunday afternoon in the spindle. of the Philippines.
Pacquiao is a colonel of the reserve army and an elected senator, ally of President Rodrigo Duterte.
"We thank our book-to-book king for not only bringing honor and glory to our flag, but also for bringing together all Filipinos around the world," said Duterte's spokesman, Salvador Panelo.
Fans called on Pacquiao to run for president, even as the boxer said after the fight that he was not looking for a top job.
"Manny Pacquiao presiding, he is our idol and we will not stop supporting him," Elpidio Bagayones, a port worker, told AFP.
Some badysts, however, have doubts that Pacquiao would get a rematch on Floyd Mayweather – who had watched the game from the edge of the ring – after Filipino's defeat in 2015, saying he had not managed to knock out Broner.
"He's clearly won, but I'm not sure that Floyd Mayweather has lost any sleep after that, or is eager to jump into the gym for another fight," AFP reporter Ryan Songalia told AFP. from Ring Magazine.
