Southampton won this game 4-1 last season and a repeat yesterday would not have flattered them. The saints have an increasingly confident and forward-looking appearance under Ralph Hasenhuttl and could have scored more than the two goals they achieved, though both were memorable in different ways.

Southampton was by far the busiest team in the first period and would have wondered why she was not comfortably in the lead at the break.

Scoring a goal of 20 yards takes a little work. Take a step forward Lucas Digne. Southampton's win over Everton, fully deserved, ensured their survival, but hoped for a huge arm-strike – but this clash will never be remembered.

You could not help feeling sympathy for Everton's defender. It was almost comical. By inadvertently turning the ball towards his own goal after chasing after Nathan Redmond, you expected the ball to pbad in front of the post or be comfortably saved by Jordan Pickford.

That was not the case either, the ball being in some way tucked between the England No.1 right hand and the post to score what turned out to be the winner. Worthy could try it 100 times and could not reproduce it once. Pure bad luck.

The saints were the streets in front
