- The "glbad" of Universal and Mr. Night Shyamalan has earned $ 40.6 million since Sunday and is expected to earn about $ 48 million here Martin Luther King Jr. Day Monday.
- It was a strong start, but the film had the potential to earn more.
- Industry projections prior to the exit were 60 days to $ 70 million over four days.
- Shyamalan's latest film suffered from a low Rotten Tomatoes score.
- However, Shyamalan does not care about the bank. "Glbad" is his third consecutive movie to make a profit.
Universal had planned everything for a big holiday weekend with Martin Luther King Jr. with his latest release of Mr. Night Shyamalan, "Glbad," which marks the end of the director's "Unbreakable" trilogy. And although the film does more than its $ 20 million budget, self-financed by Shyamalan, everyone involved was hoping for a lot more.
"Glbad" reported $ 40.6 million on Sunday and is expected to earn about $ 48 million on Monday, according to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. That would make the film, the latest collaboration between Shyamalan and Blumhouse Productions ("Get Out"), the third-biggest opening ever for the four-day MLK Day weekend.
The industry's projections, however, had announced that the film would begin over a four-day period between $ 60 and $ 70 million, pushing the other studios away from the holiday weekend. In 2016, "Split", Shyamalan's unexpected sequel in his cult film "Unbreakable", released in 2000, has become an unexpected box office darling.
However, the performance of "Glbad" is the latest example: it is impossible to predict the reaction of the public (and critics) to a film by Mr. Night Shyamalan.
Split Universal
The success of "Split" led to the rare event where two studios were willing to work together on a film. It was agreed that Universal would release "Glbad" in Canada and that Disney would take care of the international release of the film.
Although the film was extremely enthusiastic and it is the first major release of 2019, people have become less enthusiastic when critical reactions have spread to online and social media. With a current score of 35% on rotten tomatoes, and the word beginning to spread on the disappointing end of the film, the film would not support its projections.
But this is by no means a failure for Universal. The hype allowed the studio to have the MLK weekend for itself. Monday, the film will exceed "Cloverfield" of 2008 ($ 46.1 million) and will become the third largest opening of the holiday weekend, with "Ride Along" in 2014 ($ 48.6 million) and "American Sniper" (2015: 107.2 million first, respectively.
Having already won more than his budget, "Glbad" will be the third consecutive Shyamalan movie to make a profit. They all worked with Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions "The Visit" ($ 5 million budget), "Split" ($ 9 million) and "Glbad" ($ 20 million). And all three were self-financed by the scriptwriter-director.
