KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Jamaican Epilepsy Association (Jamaica Association for Epilepsy) has partnered with the National Group for Jamaica to raise funds to help purchase drugs for people suffering from the disease.

Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which clusters of nerve cells in the brain sometimes generate abnormal signals that cause strange sensations, emotions and behavior, even convulsions, muscle spasms, and can lead to loss of consciousness.
Joy McHugh, Executive Director of the Jamaican Epilepsy Association, explained that the cost of drugs can be expensive. She said the cost of two to three or even four to six different drug combinations ranged from $ 12,000 to $ 45,000 per month per person.
As a result, many people living with the disease have difficulty buying their medications.
"In Jamaica, it is difficult for people with epilepsy to find a job," she pointed out, adding that "once we know that it is not easy for people with epilepsy to find a job," she said. we suffer from epilepsy, some employers lose confidence in the individual ".
McHugh also noted that one of the main concerns of people with epilepsy and their families was how it affected their daily lives.
"Epilepsy not only impacts the person with the disease, it also affects the way she earns her living. Dealing with epilepsy is different for everyone. and many people can not find jobs; therefore, they can not buy their medicines, "she explained.
The badociation for epilepsy was founded in 2002 by Nora Perez, who recognized the challenges faced by people living with the disease.
"Our mission is to improve the quality of life for people with epilepsy in Jamaica," McHugh said.
She said interested people could contribute to this initiative as part of the Care Care Member Association project of the Jamaican Epilepsy Association, which is mounted on the ISupportJamaica crowdfunding platform.
