Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Danish energy group Orsted to work together on offshore wind projects.
In an announcement made this weekend, TEPCO said it "was exploring offshore wind-related business opportunities" in Japan and abroad. Orsted is a world leader in wind energy and built the world's first offshore wind farm in 1991, CNBC reported.
TEPCO said the two companies would work on the Choshi offshore wind project. In November 2018, TEPCO announced that it was conducting a seabed study to badess the feasibility of the project. They will also work on what has been described as a "strategic partnership for broader collaboration".
"We are confident that the partnership between TEPCO's extensive expertise in the Japanese energy sector and Orsted's unprecedented history in the offshore wind sector will lead to the success of the Choshi project," said Tomoaki. Kobayakawa, representative and president of TEPCO.
"We hope that this first step will pave the way for expansion beyond the coast of Japan for the development, construction, operation and ownership of offshore wind projects," Kobayakawa added.
While Friday's news is Orsted's first involvement in Japan's offshore wind energy sector, the company is more present in Asia. He is co-owner of Taiwan's first commercial-scale offshore wind project, Formosa 1, under development. The company also has four offshore wind farms off the coast of Changhua County, Taiwan. These can be developed to reach a total capacity of about 2,400 megawatts.
